The same thing happened to me. I believe it actually happened as a
result of the Apache install, not Subversion. Here's the way it
happened to me (to the best of my recollection...)
First, I uninstalled Subversion 1.0.0. Then, I installed Subversion
1.1.1. It warned me that I had Apache 2.0.48 installed, but subversion
was bound against 2.0.49, and it recommended I upgrade.
So, I then uninstalled Apache 2.0.48. I then noticed that the Apache
service was STILL THERE in the control panel - even after refreshing the
list. Ignoring that odd behavior, I proceeded to install Apache 2.0.49
(without rebooting first, since nothing recommended that I reboot).
When I looked at the Services control panel, the Apache service still
claimed to be 2.0.48 in the "comments" area.
"No problem," I thought... I'll just change the comment :-)
"This service has been marked for deletion" the control panel
complained, and wouldn't let me make any changes. I then took the time
to reboot, and the service finally disappeared (even though I had later
installed 2.0.49). I ended up running the "apache -k install" to
re-register the service before installing svn 1.1.1, and everything
worked fine from there.

Funny, everything went allright for me. What Windows version do you use?
I'm using WinXP sp1 and Win2k (sp unknown, but probably sp4).

I've seen this behaviour too. It's kind of annoying. However, it's also
Pretty easy to fix. Open a command prompt and CD to "C:\Program
Files\Apache
Group\Apache2\bin". Now execute "apache -k install". Now you should be
able
to find the Apache in the Services control panel applet.
TTFN,
Damian.
