If you have access to a book called "Pragmatic Version Control with CVS", by Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt, there is a good explanation of the differences between the two, and why C-M-M is preferable in most cases. It's explained in terms that won't send a non-programmer running for the hills.

I haven't gotten past chapter three in the SVN book yet, so I don't know if their explanation is the same as Thomas and Hunts.

...Obviously, some things aren't very obvious.
