I was afraid that was the "best" solution.

As far as I can see, externals has a lot of the same disadvantages as
using multiple separate working copies. The worst of which, in my
view, is that you cannot make atomic commits across wc's, even if all
the wc's are from the same repository.

Also, there's the problem with absolute paths in the externals
configuration and branching/tagging, but I think I've seen a patch
somewhere allowing for relative paths to be used.

From the lack of response to my other question (status on issue #695),
I assume that nobody is really working on this for the time being.
