RE: RE: Windows-bashing (WAS: Re: Can SVN share files and projects?)

With a few more improvements to Subversion I think a lot more Windows
users would switch!

The biggest items needed to convert windows users (I think) are:

* Support for exclusive locking of files. Many VSS users misuse this
feature in my opinion, but if used judiciously it is a powerful feature
lacking in Subversion.

* Support for shared files. That is the same file being located in more
than one location in the repository. If you edit/commit in one location
it is updated in the others. This was the most painful loss in
functionality we experienced when switching to Subversion.

* Ok - for some folks a missing GUI was the biggest issue. But most of
that complaining went away after a few months. However, our editorial
department is still on VSS and integration with Dreamweaver is the
biggest thing holding us back. (Though to be fair I haven't pursued
this vigorously.) None the less, better GUI and integration tools only
help.

Other than that - Subversion is FAR FAR better than VSS. I'm sure some
focus on win32 issues would compel many thousands of VSS users to
switch.

Good news is I believe these things are all planned or being worked on.

Ray

I use windows, but only at night, after the kids have gone to bed :)

Beyond that, I suspect that there are a *lot* more Windows users out
there than anyone suspects... but that's just a suspicion.
