symlink versioning

Greetings ... having mailer trouble ... disregard duplicate if found.

I noted in the 1.1 relnotes that symlink versioning is now supported.

Is this to resolve issue 677? If so, are hardlinks also now
versioned?

I need both symlink and hardlink versioning support to eliminate the
Makefile hack used with rcs, cvs, etc. in support of Solaris and
Linux image customization here.
