Possible bug in svnversion/install

Build platform: AIX 4.3
installed libxml2-2.6.3.tar.gz
configured subversion from a different dir to the untarred source
make install fails with:
/home/sources/subversion-1.0.2/ac-helpers/install-sh -c -m 644
/repos/svn/trunk does not exist.
in fact svnversion dir_does_not_exist always returns:
svn: 'ÀÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈÉÊËÌÍÎÏÐÑÒÓÔÕÖ×ØÙÚÛÜÝÞßàáâãäåæçèéêëìíîïðñòóôõö÷øùúûüýþÿfred'
Same thing on other platforms - e.g. Linux return svn: 'dir' does not exist.
