Large binaries in svn: can clean copies be disabled?

From: Peter Toft <peter_at_tofty.com>

We're new svn users. We have just uploaded a fairly large project,
including some large binary files (digital animation source content) --
a total of ~17,000 files and 7GB of data.

When dealing content of this size, the fact that svn keeps clean copies
as well as working copies becomes a significant disk space liability.
Is there are way to disable clean copies (or some other way around the
problem)?

(Apologies if this is a FAQ; as I said, we're new to svn -- but
planning to use it seriously.)

Thanks,
Peter
