I think I have to disagree with this statement. I believe it's based on the
assumption that diffs can be performed simply and easily. However, with
binary files, like Word/Doc, collisions are not easily resolved.
Therefore, binary files are an example of where "an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure". Word documents are the most common examples of such
binary files, but there are others.

Locking has to be the biggest stumbling block my management has towards
adopting subversion. (can you predict what word processor they all use?
