This is very unfortunate. I think the reason for this must be a
technical one, not because this is the way people want it to be. From a
user's (or repo administrator's) point of view, I would clearly prefer
to configure my auto-props once on the server.

As it is now, I have to make sure that all clients are configured
correctly, so I probably have to install a pre-commit hook that rejects
commits which don't have their properties set correctly.
