Yes, it has value, but I think the disadavantages of adding new code for
this outweigh the benefit. It's not worth the headache it would cause
in terms of API shift and maintenance.

Thanks for explaining your use-case. Sure, I agree that we could make
doc changes to make things easier, so that "future archeologists" don't
have to search quite as hard to figure out how to rescue data. Maybe it
could be a separate table somewhere which simply maps schema numbers to
svn releases, as you suggest. I have no problem with that.
