For what its worth, I've found the database (subversion app itself, berckley
db included) is very stable and has not choked yet on my repository of about
50,000 files (mixed binaries & text). The client app 'TortoiseSVN' on the
other hand can choke easily and on anything as low as 2000 files
('TortoiseSVN' on win2k is what I use). Thats not a hands down for
'TortoiseSVN' though, its a great app with an incredible array of feature
integration - better than anythinig else I've seen. The reason it chokes is
most definately Windows related, because when it chokes it is doing the
local file cache comparison when writing its log before a commit - its
freezes before even communicating with subversion server (redhat 8.0). I've
used the standard client tools that come with it under Linux and its fine
(no choking at all) its even a lot faster.

The only comment I can make is that if directories get too big, subversion
might choke on it. "Too big" in my case was about 5000 files in one
directory with svn 0.29 (IIRC).
Perhaps that has changed a bit in recent versions, but we decided to put
this large directory outside version control.
Can't comment on other aspects.
