I see two separate issues:
a) The first issue is about finding the best solution
for the problem.
b) The second issue is to decide which release
should include this solution.
My arguments target the first issue.
I leave the second issue to you as experts,
knowing that you will do the right thing.
From my perspective as user, including it into 1.0
of course would be cool, but I definitely see the
problems with that. And I agree completely that
minimizing the risks for 1.0 (and future compatibility)
is much more important than solving this problem
(which is no bug).
BTW, also without solving this problem, Subversion
anyway is far better than other VCSs I know.
From this perspective, this all is only a minor
detail issue.
