It could also store user/group settings if necessary like
svn:unix-ownership: :) or maybe even unix ACLs.

I have a project that uses smarty for php templates. One of its
directories (for compiled templates) needs to be writable by apache
process. So I set up group ownership to nogroup and have a go. But after
 import/checkout WC has my ownership and I have to su root just to
change it. Good I have a root access on my home box :)
