TortoiseSVN checkout on Xp times out...

I know it's been years, since anyone used Xp ;) but I have an embedded
project that forces one part of it to stay on Xp.

So on my Xp VM, I am trying to convert to SVN. So I have 1.8.12 installed
(last version to support Xp). My SVN server is running Visual SVN 3.6.

Every time I try to checkout a project - the command times out. Sometimes
it makes it further along than other times.

The only way I have managed to checkout a project on my Xp machine is to
copy the repository to it and access it via the file:: mechanism.

Obviously, this is less than optimal, so I'm wondering if anyone has
encountered this before and/or know of any work arounds.
