the manual an it is not supported till version 1.6 but should be supported
in above versions.

Importantly there was a bug in version 1.6 (or maybe it was 1.7, I can't
remember now) that DID allow file externals from another repository in
specific circumstances.

But they fixed the bug and it has thrown that error since.
