Well, according to the svn rules, all 1.x servers will work with alll
1.x clients. That means an 1.6 client will work just fine with the 1.9
server.

But I've never tested such a setup myself. I suggest that if you have
further questions about server and client compatibility, you should ask
on the svn users list about that.
