The administrator is receptive to an upgrade but asked a good question that dovetails with this discussion.
This is an HPC modeling product run most often at national supercomputer sites and they are often frozen in time to stable versions. From the discussion so far, a 1.9 client will try to emulate inherited properties on a 1.6 server. What about the reverse? Will a 1.6 client simply query a 1.9 server the way it would query a 1.6 server? Getting all property and access info at the point in the repository tree it is checking out? Will the server let this happen?
Thanks again,

Ups, yes. The inherited props were introduced in 1.8.
