as advertised that compares against the revision before the
checked-out aka base revision of the working copy.

working for both files and folder (and making it easy to understand
what you are comparing with): "show log" then right-click on the
commit you want to compare with and "compare with working copy"

and by the way:

nice omission of the part of the sentence addressing that concern
