I see that now. However, when right-clicking a file, there's a version of diff that allows you to compare against previous revisions beyond the HEAD ("diff with previous version"). There doesn't appear to be an equivalent for the "check for modifications" dialog, and by extension no way to check entire directories against previous revisions. Maybe there's a circuitous way to do that, but it shouldn't be so hard. There is definitely a case for adding the diff family of actions to the context menu for folders.

I disagree. Needing to use the commit dialog just to check for modifications opens up the possibility of making an erroneous commit, which can be a pain in the rear to reverse. The purpose of the commit dialog is to prepare a new revision for the repository, not to check what you've changed so far.
