That phrasing always confuses me. When I "compare with working copy" at the end of an update, am I comparing my new working copy with the new working base (ie. identical to a later Check for Modifications) or am I comparing the previous and new working bases (ie. the incoming updates, excluding my local edits), or am I comparing the pre-update working copy with the post-update working copy (ie. the incoming updates, excluding local edits except as modified for conflicts)?

The command sounds like it will do either the first or the last, but the last seems infeasible as the "pre-update working copy" no longer exists anywhere.

Meanwhile the second is probably the most useful action, but it doesn't really involve the working copy.
