TortoiseSVN 1.8.9 does not work on 32-bit Windows XP SP3

I have been running TortoiseSVN for many years on the same 32-bit Windows XP SP3 machine and always upgraded to newer versions upon their release.

This is the first time that after upgrading from 1.8.8 to 1.8.9 TortoiseSVN stopped working. The install completed without errors but right-clicking on a SVN project folder and choosing any SVN operation (commit, update) does nothing and closes the context menu.

I even rebooted the machine. Same symptoms after the reboot.

I upgraded to this build from 1.8.8.25755:
TortoiseSVN-1.8.9.26117-win32-svn-1.8.11.msi

After uninstalling 1.8.9 (above build) and re-installing 1.8.8.25755 (below) everything started working again:

TortoiseSVN-1.8.8.25755-win32-svn-1.8.10.msi

So I guess I will sit out 1.8.9 till the problems are resolved.
