Yeah I figured speed might be an issue.

I'm not at work to try this right now...if you right-click on a folder in
the tree view, is there a "refresh" option? Will it also refresh any open
children? I think that could work fine.

Granted, mostly I'm in and out of the repo browser quickly and have no need
to ever refresh the thing. So either way I'm probably never going to suffer
the problem personally.
