TSVN *64 bit *as well? Your reports sounds so much like a TSVN 32 bit
Install on a 64 bit Windows...

I never had these problems. It just works for me on all PCs and OSes I
tried. While writing this mail I installed
"TortoiseSVN-1.8.8.25755-x64-svn-1.8.10.msi" in a Windows 8.1 VM and it
worked out of the box. Admittedly there are no other overlay handlers
installed, but on my normal Win7 PC I user TortoiseHG and TortoiseSVN in
parallel without any issues.

The Win8 VM installation of TortoiseSVN does not show overlay icons on VM
shared folders, but it does on normal folders.
