renaming ".svn" directory (ASPDOTNETHACK) for 1.7.x/1.8.x?

I've discovered a serious bug in the SAN storage device my organization uses for shared storage (CIFS home directories, etc). Directories that begin with a "." (e.g., ".svn") cause consistent breakage as the SAN uses "."-prepended directories for internal management. I've been working with the SAN vendor but that's not moving very quickly.
I've temporarily resolved the problem by downgrading to the 1.6.x series and installing with the ASPDOTNETHACK hack. However, that trick appears to no longer work with the 1.7.x and 1.8.x series. Is there any way to enable this behavior on the modern branches or otherwise rename the ".svn" default directory used by Tortoise?
