While trying to install TortoiseSVN V1.8.2, I got this message: "Windows
Installer: This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows
Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a
newer version of the Windows Installer service."
I figured that some newer software distributed as msi files must require an
update of the installer service. The TortoiseSVN docs say it needs at
least version 3 <http://tortoisesvn.net/faq.html>. I tried running
Microsoft Update, but didn't see the updater in the list of updates I don't
have installed.
Can check the version by running msiexec.exe. I had Windows ® Installer. V
3.01.4001.5512 on Windows XP SP3.
The latest version of the installer per <
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Installer> and <
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa371185(v=vs.85).aspx>
is 5.0, but I don't know that it works on Windows XP. V4.5 should, though,
per <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803>. It looks like you can get
4.5 from <http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483>. I
downloaded WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe. It took a bit for it to display
anything when I ran it, then took a couple of minutes to run. It then said
I had to reboot before it would take effect, but running it at the command
line makes it look like it is already in effect; I get "Windows ®
Installer. V 4.5.6001.22159 ". I didn't reboot. Updating TortoiseSVN then
worked fine.
