I just got the same exact error. upgraded to 1.8 client on x64 windows. running against a 1.7.9 server.

My 1.7.3 client on another box can connect, check in and out files. I can browse the server via a web browser after being authenticated. (Digest authentication)

I try to repo browse with the 1.8 client on my windows box, and it will repeatedly ask me for user name and password. Doesn't save even though I click the box.
