All 1.x client versions are compatible with all 1.x servers. So, yes, and 1.7.x client will work with 1.6.x server.

Although, there have been several fixes for 1.6.x wrt to merging and security... so you might want to upgrade you server to 1.6.21.

Also, 1.8.0 is due in a month or so, they just started the release candidate soak period... which means 1.6.x won't be supported anymore with fixes/security updates.
