My apologies for late reply but I was ill and unable to respond.

My Administrator updated the VisualSVN Server version to 2.5.8 which uses SVN 1.7.8. Now my client works like a charm.

It seems TortoiseSVN cannot longer guaranty that all SVN 1.x Versions are interoperable. Maybe we have to open a bug so the developers (either TortoiseSVN or VisualSVN Server) become aware of this issue.
