Before going to the registry, why not have a look at the options in the
settings dialog? Wouldn't that be easier? And more obvious?
Settings dialog->Icon Overlays->Overlay Handlers
only what's checked there is used.

Updating does not get rid of a local modification. If it would, nobody
would even consider using Subversion.

maybe it's not TSVN that's (as you said) "a piece of crap" but a certain
user not knowing the very basics of SVN?
just a thought...
