requirements for TortoiseSVN

I am a noob when it comes to SVN and Tortoise SVN. I am familiar with source change control and the tool I use currently is SourceAnywhere Standalone, which I use at work. SourseAnywhere has a server piece that manages the source control on a SQL Server database on one of our servers. Then each developer has a user account and accesses the source versions via a client piece on his workstation.
I should like to try out this Tortoise thing. What I cannot figure out is whether I need to instal a backend server piece (the SVN part?) to support TortoiseSVN or whether the TortoiseSVN installation includes the server or a version of it.
If someone could clarify this for me, I should really appreciate it.
