The update is no problem, you should finish it. In fact, without it the
working copy could be 'out of date' and a commit would fail.

The usual workflow for svn is:
Create a working copy
Make local changes
Update working copy (bring in committed changes from others)
Resolve conflicts & verify that local changes play nice with the other
changes
Commit the local changes
Make local changes
...
