Bug upgrading to 1.7.4 with MS Lync running.

Windows 7, 64 bits, fully updated.
SVN strongly urged me to update to 1.7.4, and I caved in to the pressure... :)
After installing new files, the installation job presents a list of applications that need to be restarted (as an alternative to do a full system restart). The last entry on the list is Lync, after the Windows Explorer (i.e. desktop).
Lync is hard to stop - it restarts immediately, it won't die. The installation job are waiting for it to die; it won't. So the installation hangs, Lync being the only program running.
The big problem is that everything else, including the Windows Explorer, is already down, so I have no access to any start button / restart option, and cannot restart my machine without pysical access to the Restart button (or power off/on). Ctrl-Alt-Del bring up the Task manager on my local machine, not the remote one. The old trick of starting a remote task manager from the run command (edit field in the Start Menu) is not available when Windows Explorer is dead.
Fortunately, I managed to get hold of a colleague (through Lync(!)) who had not yet left the office for the weekend. Three hours later, and my machine would have been unavailable for the entire weekend. That is unacceptable.
I never tried to update from at remote desktop before, the problem may or may not be related to that.
