Broken after upgrade

I upgraded to 1.7.3.

I noticed that the icon overlays had disappeared, and found the "upgrade workspace" (or whatever it was called) command and ran that. The icon overlays appeared.

But now nothing works. An an attempt to sort this out with "clean up" doesn't work either, producing:

Cleanup failed to process the following paths:
[path name of root of workspace]
Can't open file
[root of workspace]\.svn\pristine\40\[some numbers].svn-base
The system cannot find the path specified.

And indeed the .svn directory exists but does not contain any pristine subdirectory.

So ... what to do next? At present I can't do any work.
