I am hesitant to try a fresh checkout since it's a very large
repository, which I do not want to check out in full (hence a mixture
of depths, with most parts checkout out at infinity, but some "heavy"
subdirectories elided through depth=empty, which would take some
effort to reproduce on fresh checkout). On the other hand, it looks
like I would not have much choice here...
Note that I did get the error on two different machines...
