As far as I know, there is no way for the client to display the server version.

For that, you need direct access to the repository. Dump/reload or such things. It is not possible to drop versions from the client - the whole purpose of SVN is to never lose memory. :-)

That depends on the database format (BDB or FSFS). As far as I know, they have different approaches.
