Tried this with a test working copy that has 8 file externals (from the
same repo) and 4 folder externals also from the same repo.
No change in speed at all, no matter what I select for commit. Well,
it's a few milliseconds slower when I select all the externals and
commit those instead of the parent folder.

What could be special about your setup? Any ideas?

Also, please try a fresh checkout. And also try an
$ svn st -v -R .
on your trunk folder and see whether that is slow as well.

Is your working copy on a network share or on a local harddrive?
