Please help me with a few basic questions

Hello, I read tutorials and watched videos online about how to use Tortoise SVN. I have always coded solo from my house, but in this economy I need a job with a company and they require that I know Tortoise SVN.
If I am not mistaken, do I only need the SVN url for the Repo-browser and "checkout" and it creates the folder and files from that url where I can edit the files and "commit" the changes to save them? Is that all I have to know? Because the tutorials are so lengthy and explain a million steps when it seems that all I need is the url and that is all.
