SVN take up twice the space?

I am new to SVN, just got my server setup and all of my Repositories working.
So far I love it, but, it is taking up twice the space it would normally
take up. It put a copy of the file in the .svn folder, on the client
computers. That is ok on some of my respositories because I am working with
small files, but on others I use large ISOs and virtual drives files 1-10+GB
in size, and now everything is 5-20+GB in size.
Is this normal? If it is, is there any way I can turn the .svn off? I am
guessing they use the stored file are some sort of reference so it can tell
what exactly has changed in the file.

Thanks
