Setting up a SVN server is extremely easy. A quick, and free, COTS is VisualSVN Server. Easy to use UI and uses a GUI to control commands for Apache and Subversion. The server application is free, VisualSVN, a different product made by the same company, is not.

VisualSVN provides hooks into Visual Studio. I use AnkhSVN (again, free) to hook into my subversion repository in VStudio.

I check out repos and stuff using TortoiseSVN :)
