You have a 2-man shop, therefore you do need to use an SVN server. Set
one up. It'll take you very little time. BTW, how are you doing
backups of your repository?

It may be technically possible to use another overlay slot for a
repository, but it is not done because the use cases where it's even
remotely wanted (let alone truly needed) are so few that it's not
worth doing.
