Feature request for discussion: improve Behaviour of repository browser when URL incorrect/times out

I'd like to query the behaviour of the repository browser when the URL
entered is to a server that is incorrect or invalid, or will time out
the connection. The repository browser correctly returns an error
message "Can't connect to host XXX. A connection attempt failed..."
after a period of attempting to connect to the URL. However, on
Windows 7 the repository browser hangs while making this connection
attempt, Windows marking it as a non-responding programme. Also as far
as I can tell the user has no way to cancel the connection attempt –
there's no cancel button, the repository browser can't be closed by
clicking the standard top right exit icon and keyboard shortcuts such
as Escape don't have any effect. This is v1.6.7 64-bit Windows 7 HP,
but I've seen the same behaviour on v1.5.5 32-bit XP SP2.

So two possible feature requests:

1) Make the repository browser not appear to be not responding when
waiting for a connection attempt. Is this a threading issue?

2) Provide a way for the user to cancel the request. The Escape key
acting as a keyboard shortcut would be enough for me. Alternatively,
allow the repository browser to be closed (presumably this would kill
the request).
