Transfer stops after certain period of time

I am having a problem with Tortoise SVN where checkouts will proceed for
a while, and then suddenly stop. Tortoise shows that the transfer speed
is zero and will stay on that screen until closed with the "X". The
"cancel" button does not respond.

The server is on an Ubuntu machine in my LAN. I've tried running the
server in some type of diagnostic mode, but that has revealed no clues
on what might be happening. Here is a screenshot:

I've tried doing checkouts over my wireless and with a wire, both
connection types yield the same results.
