In my experience, this often happens after committing, and I usually
have to restart Explorer.exe (e.g. by logging off, not by killing it in
taskmgr) before the icons go back to normal. You may be able to achieve
this by changing the overlays setting to None, then changing back to
whatever it was before.

I haven't completely solved this yet, though.
