Please accept my apologies for sounding like a complete newbie.

I would like to respond however to your comments.

I am using a combination of the command-line version (to do merging, validation on directories etc) and Tsvn (user interaction).
My tool does work with the command line svn commit however the user misses out on all the super cool functionality of Tsvn, such as chosing which files to commit etc.
(TSvn is an amazing piece of work, we all love it.)

Except that it does have a documented command line interface...

the client(s) and parsing output.
I would love to be able to do that but I am restricted to scripts at the moment.

In short Tsvn is brilliant, and the fact that it has a command line interface is even better. Now if only it had some command line output too.....
