externals referencing a single file

Externals are great, but I was having difficulty, trying to reference a single binary file as an external. Thought i read in the Documentation for an older versions of svn - that this was not possible. The current docs seems to indicate it is. So I still dont know if you cannot have an external 'file', or if had to do with the type of the file, as it did complain about the eol-style. A workaround was to put this file in a separate directory 'X' in the original location then use the external command to grab the 'X' dir (rather than just the file) into my other svn/work area (not sure if this is a bug).
