Feature request: special overlay for externals

I'm still a bit behind, but from my understanding, you cant commit an external that isn't modified from the original location. Perhaps this isn't necessarily true, but it would appear that a nice thing to have would be a "special" overlay for files/folders to indicate that they are externals, as well as a quick way for novice svn users to be able to determine where the original files/folders are located (without poking around in the "properties" area and perhaps accidentally changing something). Has anyone given thought to some easy way to dereference an external, or though of having a special overlay for items set as externals?
