I also get the same problem. I have had it on two systems (different clients
and different repositories) since updating to tortoise 1.6.

Clearing the log cache does seem to have fixed the problem on one system. I
will try it on the other system on Monday.

I also found, that I was getting nonsensical messages when I canceled the
log, for example
Showing 7280 revision(s), from revision 117 to revision 591 0 - 0
revision(s) selected.
and would often get a glimpse of log messages which were then immediately
deleted.

It seems like there must be some incompatibility in the log cache between
TortoiseSVN 1.6 and earlier versions.
