Stopping TortoiseSVN Temporarily - due to Network Hangups

TortoiseSVN Group,

Is there a way to stop TortoiseSVN Temporarily? When we work from home
using a VPN Client the volume of router hops and network speed make it
impossible to use Tortoise even with Broadband connections. Performing
a File Open and each directory tree traverse selection takes up to 3
minutes. It happens in both Windows Explorer and our Development
Clients.

Our thought was to stop Tortoise from checking for updates and once we
were done we could turn it back on and then commit our changes. Is this
possible and more importantly can you see any reason why it is not
advisable.

Regards,
Charlie
