Well, then why not make the tab order

* "Recent messages" button
* edit control
* file list

and focus on the edit control when the commit dialog is opened?

Please don't tell me people would be confused by having to hit
*Shift-Tab* to get to the Recent Messages button which is *above* the
edit control... :/

Or, if the tab order is to stay that way, how about putting the "Recent
messages" button below the list so the tab order is at least obvious?
But why does tab order matter anyway if you can just hit Ctrl-R to
activate that button?

Personally, I'm utterly annoyed by having to tab twice to jump from the
edit field to the file list and back because of the now non-obvious (and
IMHO non-standard[1]) tab order...

[1] Tab: move right or to the beginning of the next row of controls
    Shift-Tab: move left or to the end of the previous row of controls
