Software:
TortoiseSVN 1.4.7, Build 11792 - 32 Bit
Windows XP SP2
Description:
I installed TortoiseSVN for the first time. I did not change any settings.
I connected to the SVN server and downloaded the source project which
contains a large number of files. When I used the Windows File Explorer to
look through the directories the explorer became non-responsive. It
explorer appeared to be slow (or stuck) on loading the icon overlays.
Rebooting did not help.
I have used TortoiseCVS very successfully in the past with no slowdown.
Specific Setting (And Workaround) Identified:
I tried the tips in the TortoiseSVN FAQ about slowdowns but nothing helped.
Then I opened the Settings dialog and changed Icon Overlays Status Cache
from "default" to "none". The file explorer freed up and became snappy
again. Changing the value to "shell" also keeps the file explorer snappy.
So there is a workaround. The problem only occurs with "default".
The help page says that the "default" setting uses a separate process
running at a very low priority level. Unfortunately it runs so slow that it
uses no CPU time and makes the shell so unresponsive that after several
minutes it does not even finish redrawing one folder.
